Buying a bassoon is a significant investment, and it’s important to find something that works for you. It’s also important to make sure you have all the information before you make a choice. Here’s the top ten reasons why we think Moosmann makes the best bassoons on the market.
- Bosnian Maple Wood
- The climate in Bosnia is very harsh, so the wood grows very slowly and becomes very dense. Domestic Red or Black Maple, by comparison, grows very quickly and is much softer. The softer wood has a dark sound but lack the “ring and resonance” of the Bosnian Maple.
- Bocals
- Each Moosmann Bassoon includes two Superior Quality bocals. Materials and craftsmanship are identical to the German time-honored tradition of bocal manufacturing, making any “upgrade” in bocals unnecessary.
- Body Lock for Wing & Long Joints
- This locking mechanism provides more stability for the bassoon, which protects the tenons of these two critical joints from stress and damage.
- Oval Whisper Key Pad
- In contrast to the traditional circular whisper key pad, the oval-shaped pad on Moosmann bassoons allows the bocal to be positioned over a greater range for better intonation.
- Brass Tenon Caps on all Joints
- Brass tenon caps are standard for Moosmann bassoons. These sturdy caps add strength to the joints and help prevent them from damage.
- Lining in Wing & Both Boot Joint Sides
- Unlike other manufacturers, Moosmann lines the wing joint and both sides of the boot joint to help protect the wood from rot due to poor or infrequent maintenance.
- Cork on All Joints
- Moosmann uses cork on all of our joints. Cork is easily maintained is is a familiar repair for all technicians, unlike the string used by some manufacturers. The use of cork coupled with cylindrical tenon design helps prevent the bassoon from coming apart unexpectedly.
- Waterproof Pads
- Moosmann uses Italian soft leather pads treated with a special waterproofing process. This creates a better seal at the tone holes and greatly extends the life of the pads.
- Lining of Tone Holes
- All critical tone holes on Moosmann bassoons are lined with either Nickel-Silver or Hard Rubber, including the C# tone hold and G resonance hole. These linings not only protect the bassoon from water damage, but also provide a better seal with the pads.
- Special Pad Seat on Bb & G Tone Holes in Boot Joint
- Moosmann has developed a special pad seat on these two tone holes, which are traditionally very difficult to seal. The special seats provide for much better sealing, which leads to fewer problems over the life of the pad and much easier replacement of the pad during maintenance.
